Monte del Frà – 60 years!

Other wines from Bardolino and Bianco di Custoza have largely been forgotten because of the aforementioned wines. But it has not always been this way. Twenty years or so ago, the white wines from Bianco di Custoza were much more popular than the wines from Soave. Unlike Soave, which is made from two grapes, Garganega and Trebbiano, is made from as many as nine different grapes, which makes an exciting mix.

Diligent monks

Monte del Frà is a vineyard centrally located in Custoza at the southern end of Lake Garda and only a half hour drive west from Verona. The large stone cross in the middle of the vineyard is a reminder of a time when a monastery was located here. As is well known, monks were very diligent workers. They knew where there were good conditions for growing grapes and other crops. The vineyard has taken its name from the old monastery and its monks.

Monte del Frà was established by the brothers Eligio and Claudio Bonomo in 1958. At that time a lot of mediocre wine was being produced in Italy. Quantity was more important than quality and only a few producers were bottling and selling under their own names. In 1963 a wine law was passed based on protecting geographic regions, types of grapes and methods of production.

Focus on quality

Quality has been the main focus from day one for the brothers Eligio and Claudio. They knew that in order to make good wines they have to grow good grapes. Through thorough work they slowly but surely improved the quality of their products. They changed both how the vines were  trained, and methods of prunig from the 1,6-meter-high pergola system, to the lower “single guyot” system, which is being used by most quality wine producers in Europe. Simultaneously, they drastically reduced the use of commercial fertilizers.

The focus on quality continued in the cellar. Here they applied modern techniques that made it easier to make and mature the wines. And it paid off. Today they produce great wines from different parts of Veneto that all get wonderful reviews in both Italian and international media.

Still active

Eligio and Claudio are still producing wine with the help of three of their children, Marica, Silvia and Massimo. They own 140 Hectare of vineyards in Custoza, Bardolino, Lugana and Valpolicella. Their most famous vineyards are Monte del Frà, Ca´del Magro in Custoza and Lena di Mezzo in Fumane valley in the classical part of Valpolicella.

One of Monte del Frà´s most popular wines, the white Bianco di Custoza Superiore from the vineyard Ca´del Magro is part the Norwegian Vinmonopol´s assortment. This white wine  really gives a lot of quality for your money.
